A trip to the Big Apple isn't complete without visiting the New York State Museum. The well-respected museum contains a treasure trove of the city's artistic, historical, environmental and cultural legacies. Plus, it's free!

The New York State Museum is located at the Cultural Education Center adjacent to the Empire State Plaza in Albany, N.Y. Established in 1836, the museum was originally known as the State Geological and Nature History Survey. Today, it functions as a research and educational institution intent on preserving everything New York.

The New York State Museum features twelve new exhibitions every year. Current exhibitions include REPRESENT: Selections from The Studio Museum in Harlem, Chocolate: The Exhibition, and Ska-Ni-Kwat: The Power of the Good Mind Iroquois Beadwork.

The museum also has several permanent exhibitions on a variety of subjects. Permanent exhibits are exhibits that remain indefinitely within the museum, instead of being changed year to year. Popular museum exhibitions include Birds of New York, Metropolis Hall, Carousel and World Trade Center: Rescue Recovery Response.

The New York State Museum also hosts perhaps one of the most unique gift shops in the entire state. The New York State Museum Store is located on the first floor of the museum. The store sells a large assortment of unique merchandise which is directly developed in relationship with it's museum exhibitions and collections.

Tourists will enjoy shopping for gifts and souvenirs from a unique selection at the store. Popular items include jewelry, Museum publications, New York State regional books and food products, New York State handicrafts, reproductions and educational toys and games for children.

The New York State Museum store also offers products from of its famous exhibitions. Adirondack Wilderness exhibition merchandise includes walking sticks, woodland puppets, birch bark canoes and baskets, in addition to, reproductions of Adirondack paintings and pottery. Visitors interested in the Algonquin and Iroquois Indians way of life will also enjoy the selection of hiking, biking and nature guidebooks.

Items from the Native Peoples of New York Hall and The Governor's Collection of Native American Crafts are also available for purchase at the New York State Museum store. Tourists will enjoy selecting from authentic baskets, jewelry, crafts, and books on Native Americans indigenous to the state.

All profits received from the store merchandise sales are used to support the museum's education and research initiatives. New York State Museum members receive a 10 % discount on all Museum store merchandise. Although admission is free, donations are accepted and appreciated. The New York State Museum store's hours of operation, along with museum, are daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.
