With more than 500,000 visitors annually, the Chicago Children's Museum is the ultimate experience in learning and creative fun for children. Located at 700 E. Grand Ave. at Navy Pier in Chicago, Ill.,
this museum covers an area of 57, 000 square feet, consists of three floors and contains 15 permanent exhibits.
The Chicago Children's Museum was founded in 1982 by the Junior League of Chicago. The Chicago Children's Museum was established in response to program cutbacks in Chicago Public Schools. It originally was located in two hallways inside the Chicago Public Library. Due to its growth in popularity and expansion, the Chicago Children's Museum was relocated to Navy Pier in October 1995.
The Chicago Children's Museum is designed for children through fifth grade and their families, school and community. The 15 exhibits are designed to be interactive and to encourage play as well as learning. Some of the exhibits include the Inventing Lab, Dinosaur Expedition, Under Construction, Big Backyard and Play It Safe. Visitors have the option of self-guided visits or facilitated workshops led by a museum educator.
The Chicago Children's Museum also features one of the most famous gift shops in the city. Tourists and visitors are encouraged to browse and shop at the Museum store which sells a variety of merchandise. Noted items include unique educational toys, exhibit related games, books, souvenirs and CCM logo merchandise. All of the merchandise, toys and souvenirs are sold exclusively at the Museum store and cannot be purchased anywhere else.
The Chicago Children's Museum can be rented for special occasions and birthday parties. The museum offers a variety of packages which include catering, face painting and goody bags for kids. A private room and a free all day admission is included in every package.
The Chicago Children's Museum is open daily and operates at specific hours. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday and Saturday. Price of admission for children and adults is $8. Admission is $7 for seniors. Children under the age of 1 are free.
